Egg-Cellent for Hunger Control
Egg-Cellent News!
—Sarah Forbes, www.AlternativeMedicine.com
Declining all brunch invites to avoid the temptation of a perfect omelet? You might want to reconsider. Eating eggs for breakfast instead of something else with a comparable calorie count can actually help you lose weight, a new study says. You’ll feel fuller after the meal and will also consume fewer calories during the rest of the day.
In this study, funded by the Egg Nutrition Center of the US Department of Agriculture and published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 30 overweight women aged 25 to 60 ate either an egg- or a bagel-based breakfast followed by lunch three-and-one-half hours later. Not only did the women feel more sated after the egg breakfast, they also ate less during the ensuing 36 hours. The researchers reject the notion that the high protein content of eggs was the sole factor in their high satiety index, but they have yet to discover an alternative explanation.
